About
Dr. John Muscedere is a leading critical care researcher whose work focuses on understanding and mitigating the neurological complications that plague survivors of critical illness. His research uniquely bridges intensive care medicine and neurocognitive assessment, investigating how cerebral oxygenation deficits during critical illness may underlie long-term brain dysfunction. Dr. Muscedere has pioneered the use of innovative technologies in the ICU, including near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to non-invasively quantify regional cerebral oxygen levels and robotic technology to provide objective, quantifiable metrics of neurocognitive functioning. His landmark feasibility study (2018, 29 citations) demonstrated that robotic assessments can reliably detect cognitive deficits in survivors, opening new avenues for early diagnosis and intervention. As a key member of the Canadian Critical Care Trials Group, Dr. Muscedere has designed multicentre protocols to systematically explore the relationship between brain tissue hypoxia and neurological outcomes. His work is foundational in establishing that cerebral ischemia may be a modifiable driver of post-ICU cognitive impairment, directly informing future clinical trials aimed at preserving brain health in the most vulnerable patients.
