Joerg Kreisel is a pioneering figure in the field of space robotics and on-orbit servicing (OOS), whose work has fundamentally reshaped how the space industry thinks about satellite longevity and space sustainability. His seminal 2008 paper, "The case for robotic on-orbit servicing of spacecraft: Spacecraft reliability is a myth," with 143 citations, challenged the traditional paradigm of building expendable satellites, arguing instead for a future where spacecraft are routinely serviced, refueled, and repaired in orbit. Kreisel’s research spans the technical, economic, and policy dimensions of OOS, including active space debris removal and commercial servicing architectures. He is the driving force behind the iBOSS project and its intelligent Space System Interface (iSSI), a fully modular coupling kit that enables on-orbit assembly, servicing, and manufacturing (OSAM). This technology was successfully demonstrated on the International Space Station in 2022-2023, marking a major milestone for modular space infrastructure.
