Jan Wendler’s research career bridges two fascinating worlds: artificial intelligence and biopharmaceutical quality control. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Wendler was a pioneer in applying case-based reasoning (CBR) to dynamic, real-time environments. Their most influential work, "CBR for Dynamic Situation Assessment in an Agent-Oriented Setting" (1998, 35 citations), demonstrated how CBR could enable autonomous soccer-playing agents to select actions by drawing on past experiences—a novel approach that laid groundwork for adaptive, real-time decision-making in multi-agent systems. Wendler further advanced this line of inquiry by developing CBR methods for fault-tolerant robot self-localization (2001) and for recognizing and predicting agent behavior (2004), collectively contributing over 50 citations to the field of intelligent agents. More recently, Wendler has made a striking pivot to the pharmaceutical industry, co-authoring "High throughput FAMS – A fatty acid mass spectrometry method for monitoring polysorbate hydrolysis in QC" (2023). This work addresses a critical challenge in biopharmaceutical manufacturing: detecting hydrolytic degradation of polysorbates, which can cause visible particle formation in drug products. By introducing a high-throughput mass spectrometry method, Wendler has provided quality control labs with a practical tool to ensure product stability and safety. This transition from CBR for soccer agents to analytical chemistry for biologics showcases a rare versatility—applying computational and analytical rigor to solve problems across domains.
