About

Hoonbae Jeon is a pioneering transplant surgeon whose career has been defined by a singular mission: expanding access to life-saving organ transplantation through innovative robotic surgical techniques. Working primarily at the intersection of minimally invasive surgery and transplantation medicine, Jeon has established himself as a global authority in robotic kidney and liver transplantation. His most transformative contribution has been developing and refining robotic kidney transplantation for morbidly obese patients — a population historically denied transplantation due to surgical risk. His landmark 2010 case report (191 citations) and subsequent 2013 study (190 citations) demonstrated that robotic approaches could achieve outcomes comparable to open procedures, fundamentally reshaping how transplant centers evaluate obese candidates. A decade-long single-center analysis published in 2019 further validated this approach's durability and safety. Beyond kidney transplantation, Jeon extended robotic techniques to living donor hepatectomy, with his 2011 work on robotic right lobe donor hepatectomy (166 citations) pushing the boundaries of what minimally invasive surgery could achieve in complex donor operations. His 2013 review on the state of robotic transplant surgery helped disseminate these innovations globally. With hundreds of cumulative citations, Jeon's work has meaningfully expanded transplant eligibility for vulnerable patient populations worldwide.
