Hanif Motiwala is a pioneering urological surgeon whose work centers on advancing minimally invasive techniques for kidney and prostate surgery, with a particular focus on maximizing organ preservation. His most significant contributions lie in the development of "zero-ischaemia" robotic partial nephrectomy. Motiwala pioneered the use of intraoperative contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) to perform "occlusion angiography," a novel technique that maps segmental renal blood supply in real-time. This allows surgeons to selectively clamp only the specific artery feeding a tumor, rather than the entire renal artery, dramatically reducing warm ischaemia time and protecting overall kidney function.
