About
Guanjie Liu is a materials chemist whose pioneering work in high-throughput screening of photocatalysts has accelerated the discovery of next-generation solar energy materials. His research centers on the rapid synthesis and combinatorial evaluation of quaternary and multinary chalcogenide semiconductors, with a particular focus on Zn<i>x</i>Cd1−<i>x</i>S<i>y</i>Se1−<i>y</i> and CuInSe2-based systems. Liu’s major contribution lies in integrating robotic piezoelectric dispensing with scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) to create and screen hundreds of compositionally varied photocatalyst arrays in a single experiment—a technique that dramatically reduces the time from synthesis to performance evaluation. His 2010 paper on Zn<i>x</i>Cd1−<i>x</i>S<i>y</i>Se1−<i>y</i> (32 citations) demonstrated how hydrazine-stabilized selenium precursors enable precise control over bandgap engineering, while his work on CuInMSe2 arrays (18 citations) extended this approach to earth-abundant absorber layers for photovoltaics. By enabling rapid, parallel screening of photoelectrochemical activity, Liu’s methodology has become a foundational tool for combinatorial materials discovery, directly influencing the design of efficient, tunable photocatalysts for solar fuel production and photoelectrochemical cells.
