About
Gianluca Li Causi is a leading instrumental astronomer whose career is defined by his central role in bringing the MOONS instrument to life. His research focuses on the design, construction, and integration of cutting-edge multi-object spectrographs for large telescopes. As a key figure in the MOONS project for the Very Large Telescope (VLT), Li Causi has been instrumental in developing this revolutionary instrument, which uniquely combines the VLT’s 8-meter collecting power with the high multiplexing capability of 1,000 optical fibres deployed by individual robotic positioners. His work spans the entire lifecycle of the instrument, from final-design reviews to full-scale integration, as documented in his most-cited paper (17 citations) and subsequent updates. Through his contributions, Li Causi is helping to enable transformative science, allowing astronomers to simultaneously observe thousands of celestial objects in the optical and near-infrared. His dedication to pushing the boundaries of astronomical instrumentation makes him a vital contributor to the next generation of ground-based observational capabilities.
