About
George H. Jacoby is a leading figure in astronomical instrumentation, whose career has been pivotal to the development of the next generation of giant telescopes. His primary research focus is the design and construction of cutting-edge instruments for the 24-25 meter class Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). Jacoby’s major contributions lie in shepherding these complex systems from concept through to preliminary and final design phases. He has been instrumental in advancing G-CLEF, a high-resolution optical echelle spectrograph designed for precision radial velocity work, and in developing MANIFEST, a revolutionary multi-object fibre system that uses ‘Starbug’ robots to position fibres across a wide field of view. His work on MANIFEST, in particular, promises to dramatically increase the multiplexing capabilities of GMT’s seeing-limited instruments like GMACS. With key papers on GMT instrumentation status and prototyping studies accumulating over 30 citations, Jacoby’s impact is foundational. He is not merely building tools; he is architecting the capabilities that will enable future discoveries in exoplanet science and galactic archaeology for decades to come.
