About
Geoffrey Turner is a pioneering fungal geneticist whose work has fundamentally advanced our understanding of gene function in filamentous fungi. His primary research areas include fungal molecular biology, gene regulation, and high-throughput functional genomics. Turner’s most transformative contribution is the development of a high-throughput gene knockout procedure for *Neurospora crassa*, a landmark study published in 2006 that has garnered over 1,140 citations. By overcoming the notoriously low rates of homologous recombination in filamentous fungi through the use of yeast recombinational cloning, Turner enabled the systematic creation of knockout mutants at an unprecedented scale. This breakthrough allowed his team to functionally characterize multiple transcription factors, revealing their roles in development, metabolism, and stress responses. The impact of this work extends far beyond *Neurospora*, providing a foundational toolkit for fungal genetics that has been adopted by laboratories worldwide. Turner’s achievements have not only accelerated the pace of discovery in fungal biology but have also established a gold standard for functional genomics in non-model organisms.
