About
Dong Hae Shin is a structural biologist whose work has illuminated the molecular machinery of essential metabolic enzymes, particularly those involved in nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) biosynthesis. His most-cited study, the 2005 crystal structure of a nicotinate phosphoribosyltransferase from *Thermoplasma acidophilum* (TaNAPRTase), provided the first detailed three-dimensional view of this key enzyme in the NAD salvage pathway. By solving the structure, Shin revealed a three-domain architecture—an N-terminal domain, a central functional domain, and a unique C-terminal domain—offering critical insights into substrate binding and catalysis. This work, which has garnered 38 citations, laid a foundation for understanding how thermophilic organisms regulate NAD production and has implications for drug design targeting related enzymes in pathogens. Shin’s contributions are particularly valued for bridging structural biology with biochemistry, enabling researchers to visualize how ancient metabolic pathways operate at atomic resolution. His research continues to influence studies on enzyme evolution and the development of antimicrobial agents.
