About
Denis Routkevitch is a neurosurgical researcher whose work focuses on the intersection of advanced surgical robotics and complex spinal pathology. His primary research areas include robot-assisted spine surgery and the surgical management of tethered cord syndrome. Routkevitch’s major contribution is his landmark analysis of the learning curve for robot-assisted pedicle screw placement, published in 2023. Drawing from 234 cases, this highly cited work (22 citations) provided critical data on operative time efficiency, demonstrating that while robotic systems initially prolong surgery, proficiency is rapidly achieved, ultimately offering superior accuracy and safety over freehand techniques. This study has become a foundational reference for institutions adopting robotic platforms. More recently, in 2024, he contributed a morphometric analysis of the spinal cord in patients undergoing posterior vertebral column subtraction osteotomy (PVCSO) for recurrent tethered cord syndrome. This work provides essential anatomical insights into a novel, high-risk procedure that shortens the spinal column to permanently relieve neural tension. By quantifying spinal cord dimensions, Routkevitch is helping to refine surgical planning for this challenging patient population, bridging the gap between innovative technique and safe clinical application.
