About
Dapeng Zhu is a leading researcher in structural health monitoring and robotics, whose work bridges intelligent sensing systems with civil infrastructure. His primary research areas include mobile sensor networks, structural system identification, and automated design using robotics. Zhu’s most impactful contribution is the development of flexure-based mobile sensing nodes (FMSNs)—tetherless, wall-climbing robots that autonomously navigate steel structures to collect vibration data for condition monitoring. His landmark study, “Wireless Mobile Sensor Network for the System Identification of a Space Frame Bridge” (2012, 85 citations), demonstrated the real-world deployment of a four-node mobile sensor network for bridge health assessment, proving that robotic sensors can replace traditional wired systems. Additionally, his innovative work on pipe routing-path planning (2002, 62 citations) introduced a novel approach that treats pipe routes as robot paths, automating complex layout design under multiple constraints. This work has influenced both civil engineering and manufacturing automation. Zhu’s research has been recognized for its practical impact, offering scalable, cost-effective solutions for infrastructure monitoring. His contributions continue to inspire advances in autonomous sensing and structural diagnostics.
