About
D. Arbuckle is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of nanotechnology, robotics, and self-assembly systems, whose work has significantly advanced our understanding of how complex structures can be autonomously fabricated and repaired at multiple scales. Best known for their highly cited 2009 work on swarm robotics — "Self-assembly and self-repair of arbitrary shapes by a swarm of reactive robots" (58 citations) — Arbuckle has developed foundational algorithms enabling simple robotic agents to collaboratively construct and restore goal structures without centralized control. Their 2004 paper on "Active self-assembly" (45 citations) challenged conventional passive fabrication approaches by introducing methods capable of producing the asymmetric nanostructures essential for future nanodevices. Arbuckle further bridged the gap between design and fabrication with contributions to CAD/CAM frameworks for nanoscale self-assembly and automated nanomanipulation via Atomic Force Microscopes (33 citations), reducing human error and dramatically improving throughput in nanoscale operations. Across their career, Arbuckle has consistently pushed toward autonomous, scalable fabrication paradigms — from molecular nanotechnology to swarm robotics — making their body of work essential reading for researchers in programmable matter, nanoengineering, and multi-agent systems.
