About
Christopher M. Cirnigliaro is a leading researcher at the intersection of spinal cord injury (SCI), bone health, and rehabilitation robotics. His work centers on two critical, interconnected domains: preventing secondary health complications in SCI, particularly osteoporosis and fractures, and advancing the clinical utility of robotic exoskeletons for restoring mobility. Dr. Cirnigliaro’s major contributions include authoring the 2019 ISCD Official Position on bone mineral density testing in SCI (83 citations), which established essential clinical guidelines for diagnosing and managing skeletal fragility in this population. He has also been instrumental in evaluating the physiological and biomechanical impacts of exoskeletal-assisted walking. His 2017 study (56 citations) characterized the neuromuscular adaptations during exoskeleton use, while his 2018 work demonstrated significant reductions in total and central adiposity after 100 sessions. Notably, he co-led the first randomized clinical trial examining home and community exoskeletal use in veterans with paralysis (2024, 16 citations), a landmark study addressing real-world efficacy. Through rigorous, clinically-focused research, Cirnigliaro is shaping evidence-based practices that improve bone health and functional outcomes for individuals with SCI.
