About

C. J. Heckman’s research centers on the neural control of movement, with a particular focus on neuromodulation and motor impairments following stroke. A major contribution is the elucidation of how neuromodulatory inputs to spinal motoneurons contribute to the loss of independent joint control in chronic hemiparetic stroke. In a highly cited 2018 paper (37 citations), Heckman demonstrated that increased shoulder abductor activity triggers involuntary flexor activation in the elbow, wrist, and fingers—a phenomenon known as the flexion synergy. This work provided a mechanistic basis for abnormal muscle coactivation patterns that limit functional recovery. Building on this, a 2022 study (6 citations) showed that a noradrenergic pharmacological agent can acutely attenuate motor impairments in chronic stroke survivors, suggesting a promising avenue for therapeutic intervention. By bridging basic neurophysiology with clinical rehabilitation, Heckman’s work has significant implications for understanding spinal circuit dysfunction and developing targeted treatments for post-stroke motor deficits.
