About
C. J. Hansen is a planetary scientist renowned for her work on Mars climate and polar science. Her research focuses on understanding the Martian volatile cycle, seasonal processes, and the long-term climatic record preserved in the planet's polar layered deposits. A key contribution is her systematic enumeration of Mars years and seasons since the beginning of telescopic exploration (2015, 74 citations), which provides a standardized chronological framework essential for comparing observations and modeling across decades of Mars research. This work has become a foundational reference for the Mars science community. Hansen also played a critical role in the Mars Volatiles and Climate Surveyor (MVACS) payload for the Mars Polar Lander mission (1998), designed to study the south-polar layered deposits and their volatile inventory.
