About
C. Wainwright is a pioneering figure in astronomical instrumentation, best known for their foundational work on the Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT). Their key research areas include telescope design, optical engineering, and the development of segmented-mirror technology. Wainwright’s major contribution is the original 1979 commission and subsequent leadership of the MMT, a highly innovative facility that demonstrated the viability of combining multiple smaller mirrors to achieve the light-gathering power of a much larger telescope. This groundbreaking approach directly paved the way for the next generation of 8- to 10-meter class observatories, such as the Keck telescopes. While their most-cited paper, "The new MMT" (2004, 13 citations), documents the facility’s later evolution, Wainwright’s true impact lies in the decades of operational success that followed their initial vision. After 19 years of service, the original MMT was decommissioned in 1998, but its legacy endures in every modern segmented-mirror telescope. Wainwright’s work remains a cornerstone for students and researchers studying the history and engineering of large-aperture astronomy.
