Dr. Botao Zhu is at the forefront of soft robotics and smart materials, pioneering the integration of shape memory alloys (SMAs) into highly flexible, programmable structures. His research centers on 4D printing—where 3D-printed objects can transform over time—and the design of bio-inspired robots that mimic natural locomotion. In his highly cited 2020 work (46 citations), Dr. Zhu demonstrated the entire 4D printing process for SMAs, creating an inchworm-inspired crawling robot that pre-programs its future shape during fabrication.
