About
Barbara Haley is a radiation oncologist whose research has made significant contributions to the treatment of early-stage breast cancer, with a particular focus on stereotactic partial breast irradiation (S-PBI). Her work centers on refining and validating abbreviated, highly precise radiation therapy approaches as alternatives to conventional whole-breast irradiation following lumpectomy. Haley has been a principal investigator on pioneering phase 1 dose-escalation clinical trials exploring both 5-fraction and single-fraction stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for partial breast irradiation, using robotic stereotactic radiation systems to maximize tumor targeting while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. Her most-cited work, a 2017 paper reporting preliminary results of the 5-fraction S-PBI trial, has accumulated 66 citations and helped establish the safety and feasibility framework for this approach. Subsequent publications examining cosmetic outcomes and multicenter single-fraction protocols have further strengthened the evidence base, collectively earning over 100 citations across her body of work. By leading both single-institution and multi-institutional prospective trials, Haley has helped move stereotactic partial breast irradiation closer to mainstream clinical practice, offering patients a potentially more convenient and well-tolerated treatment option.
