Kevin Albuquerque is a radiation oncologist whose research has significantly advanced the use of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for breast cancer treatment. His primary research focus centers on developing and refining partial breast irradiation techniques, particularly through dose-escalation trials that aim to improve treatment efficacy while minimizing toxicity. Albuquerque's landmark Phase 1 dose-escalation trial for early-stage breast cancer, published in 2017 with 66 citations, established the safety and tolerability of 5-fraction SBRT for partial breast irradiation, demonstrating that higher radiation doses could be delivered safely to the lumpectomy cavity. His subsequent work evaluating cosmetic outcomes from this trial, cited 19 times, provided crucial evidence that this accelerated treatment approach maintains excellent aesthetic results. Additionally, Albuquerque has contributed to understanding complications in gynecologic brachytherapy, notably identifying the link between robotic-assisted hysterectomy and vaginal cuff dehiscence following intracavitary brachytherapy for endometrial cancer.
