About
Andrey Ivanov is a leading figure in planetary instrumentation, specializing in the development of advanced spectrometers for space exploration. His primary research focuses on the design and application of acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) spectrometers for in-situ mineralogical analysis of extraterrestrial surfaces. Ivanov’s major contribution is the creation of a compact, pencil-beam infrared AOTF spectrometer that can be mounted on robotic arms or masts of planetary probes and rovers. This technology enables precise, context-aware assessment of surface mineralogy by analyzing reflected solar radiation in the near-infrared range. His seminal 2015 paper on this subject, which has garnered 19 citations, details the instrument’s potential for missions to the Moon and Mars. Notably, this work directly led to the development of the Infrared Spectrometer for ExoMars (ISEM), a key instrument for the European Space Agency’s ExoMars rover mission. Ivanov’s innovations are critical for future planetary science, providing a robust, non-destructive method for identifying minerals and understanding the geological history of other worlds.
