About
A. Cristaldi is a volcanologist and roboticist whose work bridges the gap between hazardous fieldwork and cutting-edge technology. A pioneer in robotic volcano exploration, Cristaldi led the development of the ROBOVOLC system, a six-wheeled robotic rover designed to collect rock samples, deploy sensors, and measure gas emissions in dangerous volcanic environments. This groundbreaking project, detailed in a 2003 paper with 50 citations, laid the foundation for safer, remote data collection in active volcanic zones. Cristaldi’s research also focuses on integrating diverse datasets to model explosive eruptions. In a highly cited 2018 study (29 citations), they combined field, ground-based, and satellite measurements to reconstruct the 23 February 2013 Etna paroxysm, providing critical insights into eruption source parameters and ash dispersal.
