INDIVIDUALIZED MUSIC THERAPY FOR AFFECT, AGITATION, AND ENGAGEMENT IN OLDER WOMEN WITH DEMENTIA

Abstract

In most affluent countries, population aging and growing costs of care for older adults lead to a shift in the focus of care for older persons towards strengthening self-care and increasing informal care.This is especially challenging for people with dementia living in residential care facilities.Recently, new health care concepts are developed for people with dementia.These health care concepts are making use of recently designed technologies (GPS tracking systems, robotics) or/and new methods of care giving (holistic nursing, person centred care).Our objective is to determine which elements of these care concepts, including new technologies and new methods of care giving for people with dementia, enhance self-care or/and informal care.We performed a systematic literature review to investigate current knowledge across multiple research disciplines.Six different databases were selected and searched for relevant publications.PUBMED for biomedical literature, PsycINFO for psychological literature, ACM Digital Library for technological literature, both Social Services Abstracts and Sociological Abstracts for sociological literature and CINAHL for nursing and allied health literature.The initial search yielded more than 700 articles.After attending this session, participants will know the state of the art concerning care concepts for people with dementia that stimulate self-care via new technologies and new methods of care giving.
