Abstract

Mobile robots are increasingly being used to automate life science laboratories. Intelligent, easy-to-implement methods must be developed for tracking labware and samples. Modern solutions based on IoT (Internet of Things) methods are ideal here. This paper presents a novel approach for localizing IoT labware during mobile robot transportation in the laboratory using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons. A comprehensive data collection system, including BLE beacons, an IoT module, an IoT cloud, and a visual interface is provided. The BLE beacon features are extensively evaluated under various settings to ensure accurate and reliable tracking. By strategically deploying BLE beacons throughout the laboratory and placing the IoT module on the transportation tray, real-time monitoring of laboratory equipment during mobile robot movement is possible. This practical solution enhances laboratory efficiency and seamlessly integrates IoT functionalities, facilitating efficient management of lab equipment in the life science laboratory.
