Abstract
The infusion of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare is one of the most far-reaching changes in modern medicine. This chapter is explore how AI-empowered technology has dramatically reshaped clinical decision making, diagnosis and treatment organization systems. It also looks at changing behaviors resulting from these advances, such as slow uptake on useful research findings that are difficult to translate into practice or the widespread non-adoption of evidence-based guidelines among poorer-performing hospitals. The chapter also takes a comprehensive and critical look at the key innovations that have shaped AI, taking in machine learning algorithms for disease prediction, natural language processing (NLP) to extract clinical data from free text, and AI-assisted robotic systems for surgical operations.
