Abstract

Abstract Historically, total hip replacement was the first procedure performed in humans to remove destroyed joints and restore function through implanting an artificial joint surface. After a short period of partial replacement only of the femoral head’s surface, THR in the way we still perform it today was introduced: the acetabulum is replaced by a polyaethylen or metal cup with a plastic inlay, and the proximal femur with neck and head is replaced by a component, which is placed into the proximal part of the bone, after head and neck were cut of above the trochanteric level.
