About
A Web API (Application Programming Interface) is a standardized set of protocols and endpoints that allows software applications to communicate over the internet using HTTP requests and responses. In robotics and AI, Web APIs enable robots, embedded systems, and intelligent agents to interact with remote services, databases, and control interfaces through web-based communication protocols. For example, a robotic manipulator can be commanded remotely through a browser-based client, or a robot middleware framework like YARP can expose its functionality to external devices via modern web communication standards. Web APIs also underpin cloud-connected robotics, allowing robots to offload computation, access mapping services, retrieve sensor data, or stream telemetry to remote dashboards. In AI contexts, Web APIs facilitate data collection from web servers, support web usage mining, and enable detection of automated agents such as web crawlers. Their importance lies in providing a hardware-agnostic, platform-independent integration layer that dramatically simplifies remote monitoring, control, and data exchange in distributed robotic and AI systems.
