Emotional competence in robotics and AI refers to a system's ability to recognize, interpret, express, and respond appropriately to human emotions during interaction. It encompasses a range of capabilities, including detecting affective states through facial expressions, body language, and vocal cues; generating emotionally congruent responses; and dynamically aligning a robot's behavior to the emotional context of an interaction. Grounded in psychological models of emotion, emotional competence moves beyond purely intrapersonal accounts of affect to embrace interpersonal and communicative dimensions, acknowledging that emotions are co-constructed between interacting agents. In practice, robots with emotional competence can modulate their movements, speech, and decision-making to feel more natural and intuitive to human partners. This matters because emotionally competent systems foster smoother human-robot collaboration, increase user trust and acceptance, and support wellbeing in applications ranging from social assistants and caregiving robots to industrial human-machine teaming. As robots operate in increasingly human-centered environments, integrating emotional competence becomes essential for effective, safe, and socially appropriate interaction.
