Bicubic interpolation is a mathematical technique for estimating unknown values at arbitrary points within a two-dimensional grid by fitting a smooth surface through surrounding known data points using cubic polynomials in both spatial dimensions. Unlike simpler linear methods, it considers a 4×4 neighborhood of data points, producing smoother and more accurate approximations of continuous surfaces. In robotics and AI, bicubic interpolation serves several important roles. It is used in map construction for mobile robots—particularly in SLAM algorithms—where it helps generate accurate, high-resolution environmental representations from sparse sensor data. It also supports geomagnetic localization by smoothly interpolating field measurements across a robot's operating space, and enhances panoramic image resolution by reconstructing fine visual detail from lower-resolution captures. The technique matters because real-world robotic systems often acquire data at discrete, limited sampling rates, yet require smooth, continuous representations to plan paths, estimate positions, or process images reliably. Bicubic interpolation bridges this gap efficiently, offering a favorable trade-off between computational cost and accuracy, making it practical for real-time applications across navigation, sensing, and computer vision tasks in robotic systems.
