About

Dr. Zi‐Kun Yu is a pioneering head and neck surgeon whose work has transformed the management of recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), particularly through minimally invasive approaches. His primary research focuses on salvage surgery for NPC patients with retropharyngeal lymph node (RPLN) recurrence, a challenging condition traditionally treated with reirradiation—which carries severe radiotoxicity—or high-risk open surgery. Dr. Yu’s landmark 2020 study on transoral robotic retropharyngeal lymph node dissection introduced a novel, less invasive technique that improves access to the retropharyngeal space while reducing surgical morbidity. This work, cited 18 times, has established a new paradigm for treating RPLN recurrence, offering patients a safer alternative with better functional outcomes. His contributions are especially significant given the complexity of the retropharyngeal anatomy and the limited prior surgical options. By advancing robotic-assisted surgery in this niche area, Dr. Yu has expanded the therapeutic arsenal for NPC survivors, directly impacting clinical practice and patient quality of life. His research continues to influence oncologic surgery and inspire further innovation in transoral robotic techniques.
