About

Dr. Zhilai Hong is a leading figure in the field of synthetic biology and natural product discovery, with a specialized focus on ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs), particularly lanthipeptides. His major contribution is the development of a groundbreaking platform for the robotic construction and high-throughput screening of lanthipeptide variant libraries directly in *Escherichia coli*. This work, published in 2022 and already garnering 18 citations, overcomes a critical bottleneck in RiPP engineering by enabling the rapid generation and evaluation of thousands of lanthipeptide analogs. By automating the process of producing these complex, thioether-crosslinked molecules (containing lanthionine and methyllanthionine) in a recombinant host, Dr. Hong’s methodology dramatically accelerates the discovery of novel bioactive peptides with enhanced stability and potency. This achievement not only provides a powerful tool for fundamental studies of lanthipeptide biosynthesis but also paves the way for the rational design of next-generation peptide-based therapeutics, positioning Dr. Hong as a key innovator in the engineering of natural product libraries.
