About
Zhi-De Deng is a leading figure in the advancement of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) technology, with a career dedicated to refining both the hardware and the clinical application of noninvasive brain stimulation. His key research areas encompass TMS device engineering, coil design, and the integration of neuroimaging for precise brain targeting. Deng’s most significant contribution is his comprehensive 2015 chapter, "Advances in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Technology," which has garnered 36 citations and serves as a foundational reference for the field. In this work, he detailed innovations in pulse sources for flexible waveform control and a wide variety of coil designs, directly enabling more accurate and effective stimulation protocols. His impact is further demonstrated by his 2024 study, "Lessons learned from an fMRI-guided rTMS study on performance in a numerical Stroop task," which, despite its recent publication, has already earned 3 citations. This work showcases his translational approach, using fMRI-guided repetitive TMS to probe the causal role of the intraparietal sulcus in numerical cognition. By bridging engineering and cognitive neuroscience, Deng is not only advancing TMS technology but also refining our understanding of the neural basis of decision-making.
