About

Zhengzhe Cui is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of neural engineering and rehabilitation robotics, whose work is transforming recovery outcomes for patients with severe neurological injuries. His primary research focuses on brain-computer interface (BCI) systems for lower-limb rehabilitation, particularly for spinal cord injury (SCI) and stroke patients. Cui’s landmark 2022 pilot study demonstrated that a BCI-controlled lower-limb robot could significantly improve rehabilitation in SCI patients through short-term training, earning 29 citations for its breakthrough approach. He further advanced the field with a 2025 randomized controlled trial that introduced a multimodal BCI system integrating motor imagery and motor attempts for stroke rehabilitation, providing robust evidence for enhanced motor function recovery. Notably, Cui was the first to develop a full-cycle active rehabilitation system for SCI patients with muscle strength level 0, using BCI to enable participation even in the most severe cases.
