About
Zhengzhe Cui is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of neural engineering and rehabilitation robotics, whose work is transforming recovery outcomes for patients with severe neurological injuries. His primary research focuses on brain-computer interface (BCI) systems for lower-limb rehabilitation, particularly for spinal cord injury (SCI) and stroke patients. Cui’s landmark 2022 pilot study demonstrated that a BCI-controlled lower-limb robot could significantly improve rehabilitation in SCI patients through short-term training, earning 29 citations for its breakthrough approach. He further advanced the field with a 2025 randomized controlled trial that introduced a multimodal BCI system integrating motor imagery and motor attempts for stroke rehabilitation, providing robust evidence for enhanced motor function recovery. Notably, Cui was the first to develop a full-cycle active rehabilitation system for SCI patients with muscle strength level 0, using BCI to enable participation even in the most severe cases. Beyond neural rehabilitation, Cui has contributed to robotics engineering, designing the Larva-Bot, a novel self-reconfigurable modular robot analyzed through screw theory.
