About
Zhen Gooi is a leading surgical oncologist and researcher whose work is reshaping the treatment landscape for HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer (HPV+ OPC). His primary research focuses on integrating immunotherapy with response-adaptive, de-escalated locoregional therapy to reduce treatment toxicity while preserving excellent survival outcomes. Gooi has been instrumental in landmark clinical trials, including the OPTIMA II trial (30+ citations), which demonstrated the feasibility of using neoadjuvant nivolumab, nabpaclitaxel, and carboplatin followed by risk-stratified de-escalation. His 2024 study on neoadjuvant nivolumab plus chemotherapy with response-adaptive therapy (45 citations) further established immune checkpoint inhibitors in the curative setting. Gooi also pioneered the use of circulating tumor HPV DNA as a dynamic biomarker for treatment selection (2025, 7 citations) and investigated novel immunotherapies like the arenavirus-based HB-200 vaccine in the TARGET-HPV trial (2024, 12 citations). Beyond oncology, he developed the Robotic ENT Microsurgery System (REMS) for microvascular surgery (2017, 31 citations), showcasing his versatility. With over 125 total citations, Gooi’s work is driving a paradigm shift toward personalized, de-intensified treatment for HPV+ OPC.
