Evgeny Izumchenko is a leading translational researcher in head and neck oncology, whose work focuses on integrating immunotherapy and biomarker-driven strategies to de-escalate treatment for human papillomavirus–associated oropharyngeal cancer (HPV+ OPC). His major contributions center on pioneering neoadjuvant checkpoint inhibitor–chemotherapy combinations and response-adaptive locoregional therapy. As principal investigator of the OPTIMA II trial, he demonstrated that nivolumab, nab-paclitaxel, and carboplatin followed by risk/response-adapted de-escalation can safely reduce treatment intensity while preserving excellent outcomes in HPV+ OPC.
