About
Nishant Agrawal is a leading surgical oncologist and researcher whose work is reshaping the treatment landscape for HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer (HPV+ OPC). His research centers on integrating immunotherapy with response-adaptive, de-escalated treatment strategies to reduce toxicity while preserving excellent survival outcomes. Dr. Agrawal’s landmark contributions include the OPTIMA II trial, which demonstrated that neoadjuvant nivolumab, nab-paclitaxel, and carboplatin, followed by risk-adapted locoregional therapy, can safely de-intensify treatment in HPV+ OPC. He has also pioneered the use of circulating tumor HPV DNA (ctHPV-DNA) as a dynamic biomarker to guide response-adapted de-escalation, and is investigating neoadjuvant HPV16-specific arenavirus-based immunotherapy (HB-200) in the TARGET-HPV trial. With over 130 citations across his most-cited works, his research has established new paradigms for balancing oncologic efficacy with functional preservation. Beyond his clinical trials, Dr. Agrawal has been instrumental in implementing transoral robotic surgery (TORS) programs in academic medical centers, advancing minimally invasive surgical approaches for head and neck cancer.
