Dr. Zhaoyang Zhang is a leading figure in satellite aerosol remote sensing, whose work has fundamentally advanced our ability to monitor atmospheric particulate matter from space. His research focuses on developing and validating high-resolution aerosol retrieval algorithms, particularly for complex land surfaces and next-generation geostationary satellites. Dr. Zhang’s major contributions include the creation of a simple, universal aerosol retrieval algorithm for Landsat imagery that overcomes the coarse resolution limitations of operational products, enabling city-level air quality monitoring. He has also been instrumental in the rigorous validation of aerosol optical depth (AOD) products from Himawari-8, NPP-VIIRS, and MODIS, with his seminal 2018 validation study of Himawari-8 over China accumulating over 107 citations.
