About
Yukinori Yamagata is a pioneering surgical oncologist whose work has fundamentally advanced minimally invasive approaches to esophageal and gastric cancer surgery. His research centers on robotic-assisted esophagectomy, mediastinal lymphadenectomy, and postoperative quality of life — areas where he has made internationally recognized contributions. Yamagata is best known for developing and refining robot-assisted transmediastinal esophagectomy (RATME), a nontransthoracic technique that achieves radical mediastinal lymphadenectomy while dramatically reducing pulmonary complications associated with conventional transthoracic surgery. His landmark 2015 paper comparing robotic and transthoracic approaches has garnered over 80 citations, while his foundational 2013 work demonstrating the feasibility of totally transhiatal robotic lymphadenectomy in the middle mediastinum helped establish this technique globally.
