About

Rei Ogawa is pioneering the next frontier of minimally invasive gastric cancer surgery through the development of the MILAR (Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic and Robotic) system. By ingeniously combining the da Vinci Single-Port (SP) robot with conventional laparoscopic techniques, Ogawa has created a hybrid approach that overcomes the spatial limitations of single-port robotics while preserving the benefits of precision surgery. Their 2024 studies, which have already garnered early citations, demonstrate that this novel technique offers a safe and feasible alternative for distal gastrectomy, expanding the surgical toolkit for complex gastric cancer cases. Ogawa’s work also addresses the intricate challenge of completion gastrectomy in patients with prior reconstructions, as shown in their 2022 case report on robot-assisted preservation of the interposed jejunum. By pushing the boundaries of what is technically possible in robotic gastrectomy, Ogawa is not only improving short-term outcomes but also setting the stage for more nuanced, patient-specific surgical strategies in gastrointestinal oncology.
