About

Yu-Ting Lai is a pioneer in the development of flexible, highly durable tactile sensing technologies for humanoid robotics. Her key research areas center on capacitive tactile sensing arrays and novel electrode architectures designed to function as artificial skin. Lai’s most influential work, “A Novel Highly-Twistable Tactile Sensing Array using Extendable Spiral Electrodes” (2009), introduced a groundbreaking design that employs spiral electrodes to achieve exceptional flexibility and twistability, allowing the sensor to conform to complex, curved surfaces without damage. This innovation, which has garnered 21 citations, directly addresses a critical limitation in robotic tactile sensing: durability under mechanical stress. Building on this, her 2010 study on a flexible capacitive array featuring a common floating electrode further refined sensor reliability for humanoid applications. By enabling robots to sense touch on non-planar surfaces, Lai’s contributions have advanced the field of soft robotics and human-robot interaction. Her work stands as a foundational step toward creating truly dexterous, sensitive robotic hands and full-body artificial skin, making her a notable figure in the development of next-generation tactile interfaces.
