Yu Murata

About

Yu Murata is a key figure in microsatellite and CubeSat engineering, with a focus on the Space Robotics Laboratory (SRL) at Tohoku University. His research centers on the thermal design, attitude control, and on-board computing systems for small satellites. Murata’s major contributions include the development of the 50-kg-class RISESAT microsatellite, which successfully demonstrated high-resolution Earth observation and optical communication after its 2019 launch. He also contributed to the IHI-SAT 3U-CubeSat, which validated an Automatic Identification System (AIS) for maritime ship tracking. Additionally, Murata has advanced the design of custom, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS)-based on-board computers that have been proven in orbit over the past decade.
