About
Youjun Chang is a leading researcher in neurorehabilitation engineering, with a focus on restoring function and quality of life for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). His work centers on the clinical application of lower limb walking exoskeletons, investigating their impact beyond mobility. In a landmark 2023 randomized controlled trial (12 citations), Chang demonstrated that exoskeleton-assisted walking significantly improves quality of life and activities of daily living in patients with complete SCI. More recently, his 2024 pilot study (5 citations) broke new ground by exploring the brain–gut axis, revealing that exoskeleton use can positively alter bowel function and intestinal flora—a novel mechanistic insight into secondary complications of SCI. By bridging robotics, physiology, and patient-reported outcomes, Chang’s research is shaping evidence-based protocols for wearable assistive technology. His work not only advances clinical rehabilitation but also opens new frontiers in understanding how robotic intervention influences systemic health, making him a key voice in the future of neurorestorative medicine.
