About
Yoshio Sugino is a pioneering urologic surgeon whose research focuses on refining minimally invasive techniques for renal and pelvic cancers, with a particular emphasis on robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN). His most significant contribution is the development and validation of a novel "off-clamp, non-renorrhaphy" approach to RAPN, which eliminates both renal artery clamping and parenchymal suturing—a paradigm shift aimed at reducing ischemia time and preserving nephrons. In a landmark 2019 study (18 citations), he demonstrated that this technique is safe and effective for cT1b renal tumors, achieving outcomes comparable to those for smaller cT1a masses. Sugino further advanced patient safety by showing that asymptomatic renal artery pseudoaneurysms are absent on contrast-enhanced CT after non-renorrhaphy RAPN (13 citations), challenging the need for routine postoperative imaging. His work also extends to fluorescence-guided surgery, exploring 5-aminolevulinic acid-induced protoporphyrin IX to delineate tumor margins during RAPN (2025).
