About

Yasutomo Nasu is a leading figure in urologic oncology and robotic surgery, whose work has fundamentally shaped modern approaches to kidney, bladder, and prostate cancer treatment. His major contributions center on rigorous comparative effectiveness research, demonstrating through prospective multi-institutional trials and meta-analyses that robot-assisted techniques can match or surpass traditional open and laparoscopic methods. His landmark 2020 study on robot-assisted partial nephrectomy for renal hilar tumors (48 citations) provided crucial evidence for adopting minimally invasive approaches in complex kidney-sparing surgery. Nasu has also systematically evaluated outcomes in radical cystectomy, with multiple meta-analyses (totaling over 90 citations) comparing robotic versus open approaches for complications, quality of life, and oncologic control. His work extends to improving patient quality of life through predictive models for post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence using pelvic MRI parameters (36 citations), and investigating the physiologic impact of steep Trendelenburg positioning (32 citations). Notably, he performed the first robotic renal autotransplantation outside North America. Through large-scale analyses of surgeon and hospital volume effects on safety, Nasu has provided actionable insights for optimizing surgical training and patient outcomes in robotic urologic surgery.
