Woogyung Kim is a leading figure in satellite aerosol remote sensing, whose work has been instrumental in building the long-term, consistent climate data records needed to understand atmospheric particles and their impact on air quality and climate. His research focuses on the development, validation, and extension of the Deep Blue aerosol algorithm, a cornerstone technique for retrieving aerosol properties over bright land surfaces. Kim’s major contributions include successfully transitioning the Earth Observing System (EOS) aerosol record from MODIS to the newer VIIRS instrument, ensuring data continuity for climate studies.
