About
Werner Meier is a leading figure in gynaecological oncology, whose research has fundamentally shaped the clinical understanding and management of borderline ovarian tumours (BOT). His work, primarily conducted through the German Arbeitsgemeinschaft Gynaekologische Onkologie (AGO) study group, focuses on the critical interplay between surgical staging, patient age, and long-term prognosis. Meier’s landmark contributions stem from the AGO ROBOT study, a large-scale investigation that has provided the most robust evidence to date on this rare disease. His highly cited 2014 study (75 citations) was the first to demonstrate that age is an independent prognostic factor in BOT, revealing that younger patients have distinct clinical characteristics and significantly better outcomes. This finding challenged the prevailing one-size-fits-all approach to treatment. Complementing this, his 2015 analysis (42 citations) rigorously dissected the prognostic value of individual surgical staging procedures, providing surgeons with a data-driven framework to optimize care while minimizing overtreatment. By leveraging a large, centrally-reviewed patient cohort, Meier’s work has established new standards for risk stratification and surgical decision-making, making him a pivotal authority in the field of ovarian cancer research.
