About

Dr. Wade J. Sexton is a leading urologic oncologist whose research centers on minimally invasive surgical management of genitourinary malignancies, particularly testicular, kidney, and upper tract urothelial cancers. He is internationally recognized for pioneering and refining retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) techniques, demonstrating through prospective clinical trials and retrospective cohort studies that both laparoscopic and robotic approaches can be performed safely and feasibly in the primary and post-chemotherapy settings. His landmark 2012 prospective trial (41 citations) established the safety of modified RPLND at time of nephroureterectomy, while his 2022 cohort study (27 citations) confirmed the viability of minimally invasive RPLND for testis cancer. Dr. Sexton has also made substantial contributions to renal surgery, including a comprehensive review of 975 partial nephrectomies characterizing risk factors and management of urinary leaks (15 citations). His work on robotic-assisted renal surgery, surgical margin status in high-risk cystectomy, and the role of biopsy in managing bilateral benign renal oncocytomas reflects his commitment to optimizing oncologic control while minimizing morbidity. Dr. Sexton practices at Moffitt Cancer Center, where his innovative, evidence-based approaches continue to shape standards of care in urologic oncology.
