About
W. Sjoerdsma is a pioneer in the field of surgical robotics and haptic feedback for minimally invasive surgery (MIS). His foundational work addresses a critical bottleneck in laparoscopic procedures: the loss of direct tactile sensation and the reliance on assistants for camera and instrument control. Sjoerdsma’s most influential contribution is the development of a hydraulic forceps with force-feedback (1996, 43 citations), which restored a sense of touch to the surgeon’s fingertips during MIS, significantly improving precision and safety. Building on this, he designed PASSIST, a passive instrument positioner (2000, 21 citations), which empowered surgeons to directly manipulate the camera and graspers, eliminating the indirect control that disrupts the surgeon’s eye-hand coordination. By tackling the fundamental ergonomic and sensory limitations of laparoscopy, Sjoerdsma’s work laid the groundwork for modern robotic surgical assistants.
