Vitaly Citovsky is a pioneering plant biologist whose research has fundamentally reshaped our understanding of plant–pathogen interactions and genetic transformation. His key contributions span molecular mechanisms of *Agrobacterium*-mediated DNA transfer, nuclear import in plants, and the development of advanced crop transformation technologies. Citovsky’s seminal work on the VirE2 and VirD2 proteins elucidated how *Agrobacterium* delivers T-DNA into plant cells, a process that underpins modern plant genetic engineering.
