V. Ramanathan is a pioneering climate scientist whose research has fundamentally reshaped our understanding of atmospheric aerosols and their profound impact on the Earth’s climate system. His key research areas include aerosol radiative forcing, black carbon and brown carbon absorption, and the regional climate effects of pollution plumes. Ramanathan’s major contributions stem from his leadership in the Indian Ocean Experiment (INDOEX), which revealed the massive “Asian Brown Cloud”—a thick haze of anthropogenic aerosols over South Asia.
